Special Mechanical Systems

SwRI scientists developed and patented a laboratory prototype 3D measurement system that projects light though a rotating grating onto a surface to be measured. A camera images the surface through a single grating rotation, permitting x, y, and z coordinates to be determined for each pixel.

The Special Mechanical Systems group performs detailed analysis and design of mechanical systems, such as miniature mechanisms, electromechanical systems, optics, and electronics packaging. Resources include precision fabrication facilities and two optics laboratories.
